Prevent Your Water Lines From Freezing

Even though temperatures may be warming up, there is still a high probability of water lines freezing/bursting. Please take every precaution, especially if you live in the older section of Manhattan.

Due to the prolonged freeze, we would like to remind everyone of the possibility of frozen water service lines.  If, in the past, you have experienced such a freeze or think your lines may be freezing, please run a small amount of water from an inside faucet to stop possible freezing or burst pipes.

Additional tips can be found on the American Red Cross website: Winter Storm Safety

Snow Removal

Winter is upon us and that means colder weather and the possibility of snow. We strongly recommend that you delay clearing your driveway until the snow plows have cleaned the  majority of your street.  Village ordinances prohibit the discharge of snow onto the Village streets. This  illegally placed snow may freeze or become compacted and create a hazard for you and other motorists.

Winter Parking Reminder and Tips

Please note there is No Parking on all streets after a two inch (2") snowfall or one inch (1") ice buildup. (Ord. 682, 12-1-1998).

Ord. 1188, 11-18-1-11: DEPOSITING OF SNOW AND SLUSH UPON PUBLIC STREETS AND SIDEWALKS PROHIBITED: No snow or slush removed from private property by way of shoveling, plowing or blowing shall be deposited upon any village sidewalk or the paved section of any public road, street or highway within the village. (Ord. 611, 1-17-1995)

Preventing Bicycle Theft in our Community

The Manhattan Police Department is pleased to offer residents bicycle registry. For a one-time $3.00 fee cyclists can register their investment by providing the department with their name, phone number, Make/Model, Serial Number and color of their bike. For families registering their bicycles, the fee is $3.00 for the first bicycle and $2.00 for each additional. A permanent numbered tag will be affixed to the frame to further aid in identifying your property.

Registering makes the recovery process more likely. Too many bicycles end up in evidence rooms, unclaimed, due to no owner information. Should your bicycle become lost or stolen, make a report to the Manhattan Police Department.

To have your bicycle registered, please contact the Manhattan Police Department, at 815-478-4408, to schedule an appointment Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
